The sun rose over a chilly morning at the Genesee Valley Sports Complex, located near The University of Rochester. Twenty-five athletes gathered for the figure skating competition during the Winter Games, eager to compete.
The skating itself began shortly after 9:30, with a brief warm-up. One by one, each athlete took to the ice, and showed off their skills. After each athlete performed there first routine there was a lunch break, where the athletes, coaches, and the audience mingled. Soon after, the long program began.
The sheer looks of joy and passion illuminated the athletes’ faces, but the real expressions to watch were those of the audience, cheering along to the routines. These are the people who came to see their friends, family, and neighbors compete, and their smiles say it all. No one was alone, no matter the situation.
